January 2009

As one year ends and another begins we now continue in earnest with our programme for 2009.

In Arreton on Saturday 7th March we are holding our annual Fabric Sale with local retailers all in one place. Do drop in for coffee and a chat and purchase a ticket for our Charity Raffle Quilt, and have retail therapy all in one go.

We are staging a Quilts and Flowers Exhibition in St Georges Church Arreton from Saturday 30th May to Friday 5th June. The ladies who provide the flowers in the Church, will be arranging displays to complement the Quilts on show. It is Vectis Quilters 21st Birthday this year and therefore the theme for our exhibition is ‘Celebration’ although quilts with other themes are welcome as well.

We hope to have another good showing of quilts at the National Quilt Championships at Sandown Park in Esher in June, perhaps top the number of entries that Vectis Quilters members sent last year. We actively encourage everyone to enter, even our new members whatever their quilting level.

A challenge is set twice a year for members; the last one was a small pack of Liberty fabric given to each member to make an item of their choice. The stipulation was that only the fabric supplied could be used unless you were lining the item ( i.e. a bag or tea cosy). We had a wonderful selection ranging in size from egg cosies, a mouse with a musical insert that played ‘Merry Christmas’ when her tail was pulled, covered notebooks to bags.

We all had great fun participating in the challenge and the next one to be completed for our July social evening is to make an A4 sized quilt using the initial letter of member’s name. This can be any font and appliquéd, embroidered painted or any other style the maker wishes to employ.

We are always pleased to have visitors at our meetings (£3.50 per person) and if you look at our monthly meeting list you will see our programme of speakers and our social evenings as well.

Please get in touch with anyone listed on our Contact Vectis Quilters page either by phone or email for further details.
